Built in 1900, Douglas House was a five storey office building located in Pimlico, Central London. Pamlico is a small area of central London in the City of Westminster. At Pimlico’s heart is a highly disciplined grid of residential streets laid down by the planner Thomas Cubitt beginning in 1825 and now protected as the Pimlico Conservation Area.
Pimlico is also home to the pre-World War II Dolphin Square development and the pioneering Churchill Gardens and Lillington and Longmoore Gardens estates, now designated conservation areas in their own right. The area has over 350 Grade II listed buildings and several Grade II* listed Churches.
Notable residents have included politician Winston Churchill, designer Laura Ashley, philosopher Swami Vivekananda, actor Laurence Olivier, illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley, Kenyan nationalist Jomo Kenyatta and inventor of lawn tennis Major Walter Wingfield.
The client Pantelli Associates, wished to convert the building into a series of 10 luxury apartments, with a new rooftop pavilion providing two additional floors for penthouses. The Italian designer wished to make excellent use of the original warehouse features to create the modern apartments including 10 car parking spaces.
It was essential to design and install an IP based communications and security system that would suit the requirements of such high specification apartments.
To carry out the detailed design, commissioning, supply and installation of a complete cable system to support the IT, Data, Voice, Television and Security Systems for both the landlords and tenants areas of the building.
Telephone Infrastructure – PDS installed voice links from the DP position to the telephone positions within the Landlord areas and Apartments. 2No telephone lines were provided to each Apartment with capability for a future broadband connection. Red Care telephone lines, to monitoring cards/interfaces, were also provided for the Fire Alarm System, Lift installation, BMS and Security Systems.
IP Network – A number of RJ45 communications outlets were installed throughout the building to support the landlord for communications and security systems and by the future tenants for any IP based technologies they may desire. Each apartment was provided with communications cabinet located within the utilities cupboard to house IT, TV and AV equipment.
Television System – A complete IRS integrated radio/television/satellite receiving system, was installed, including all necessary equipment, cabling and services to receive, process and distribute sound signals, television signals, satellite signals and their associated data signals for FM radio, RSL Analogue, Digital Audio Broadcast, Digital Terrestrial Television, Analogue and Digital Satellite Television and Radio & Sky TV.
IP Based Security Systems – In order to provide the security required necessary for such high end apartments IP CCTV, Access Control and Video Entry Systems were installed. It was necessary to provide security access control system which would help manage and control pedestrian and vehicular access to the building. This included restricting access by unauthorised persons to the main entrances of the building whilst facilitating the entry of authorised persons. At each entrance to the site a flush mounted access control intercom unit, was installed with colour camera and audio link to resident’s apartments and the concierge desk. Within each apartment a colour VoIP, wall mounted video intercom display unit, was installed to allow all residents and concierge staff to have audio visual communication with visitors.
